It's The Simple Things (Poetry Wednesday)

As a lover of the outdoors, I adore Thoreau and his obvious penchant for capturing nature with his poetry (though sometimes as in this poem there's a touch of melancholy). Given Molly's challenge on a poem for gratitude, I thought this one perfect as a reflection on the beauty God has given us, and being humbled by simplicity (or the not so simple); and not thinking to highly of ourselves in the scheme of things.

I"M THANKFUL THAT MY LIFE DOTH NOT DECEIVE

by Henry David Thoreau

I’m thankful that my life doth not deceive
Itself with a low loftiness, half height,
And think it soars when still it dip its way
Beneath the clouds on noiseless pinion
Like the crow or owl, but it doth know
The full extent of all its trivialness,
Compared with the splendid heights above.
See how it waits to watch the mail come in
While ’hind its back the sun goes out perchance.
And yet their lumbering cart brings me no word,
Not one scrawled leaf such as my neighbors get
To cheer them with the slight events forsooth,
Faint ups and downs of their far distant friends—
And now ’tis passed. What next? See the long train
Of teams wreathed in dust, their atmosphere;
Shall I attend until the last is passed?
Else why these ears that hear the leader’s bells
Or eyes that link me in procession?
But hark! the drowsy day has done its task,
Far in yon hazy field where stands a barn,
Unanxious hens improve the sultry hour
And with contented voice now brag their deed—
A new laid egg—Now let the day decline—
They’ll lay another by tomorrow’s sun.

Thanks Molly! This was fun! Now I've got to get to bed... :)

Catch Up Time

I can't believe how far I let this blog go on keeping up to date with the happenings of our little abode! Forgive me kids. I will try to catch up with one set of pics per day till I've arrived at the present.
I have to post this link as it is my favorite little pick me up at the moment. Rhett and Link are Christian comedians on You Tube and their work has filled a void for good humor that Matt and I have been craving for ages!
Please go check out their "channel" on you tube and their very own website. My favorite two videos thus far are the "Cheese Rap" and "The '80's." Right now they are working on perfecting local commercials. Hilarious! Also, if you look up "The Fabulous Bentley Brothers" on you tube Rhett and Link have about 8 videos with a song and synopsis of different books of the Bible. The kids love it!

Inspired Dress Up

Remembering our recent trip to the monastery in CA, Ella designed this dress -up combo from old dance clothes a friend passed down to us. After running into the room screaming, "Look Mom! I'm a nun!" Matt dubbed her "Mother May I," which I found quite fitting! Titus loves the spot light as much as Ella, and upon seeing the camera out, snuck into the shot with her and flashed this cheesy grin! Love it!

On Our Way Home

We spent allot of time with my grandmother and my brother (from my dad's 2 cnd marriage in the picture he is holding Ella alongside my grandma). He is a very cool little guy with a great sense of humor and wit. My grandmother Louise never ages and has a very dry sense of humor that's allot of fun! She is a fantastic host and we were never in need of anything.
We were totally ready to go home on our departure date but weren't excited about our plane leaving Santa Barbara airport at 6 am. Because of all the security hoopla, dropping off our rental van, and the 40 minute drive to get there, we had to wake up by 3:45 to leave by 4:15! The kids handled it surprisingly well. We made it through security without any hassles and dropped off the van in time. Finally, we were on the plane and on our way to Phoenix... Until we hit a flock of geese! I didn't even know that CA had geese! Here is a link to a news report :
http://www.keyt.com/news/local/52602352.html

We circled above the coastline for 20 minutes with all of us wondering why they couldn't just go on to Phoenix for all of our connections if we could fly just fine for 20 minutes? The stewardess did a great job seeming nonchalant about the whole thing. If I had known the real reason we were circling was to reduce fuel weight in case of fire upon a landing gear malfunction, I would have been a mess! I'm humbled over God's protection for this and through the whole thing.
When we landed and as we walked out of the plane (SB airport is so tiny there are no tunnel like exits so you have to walk across the tarmac), we were able to see the big brown goose that was wrapped around the front landing gear. I could slap myself for not getting a pic of this, but we were too wrapped up in the whole fiasco to think about future reflections on the event.
We went into the airport and found a great outdoor area with a grassy lawn, and a little mechanical display with balls dropping into tunnels, etc (see pic) that the boys were mesmerized with for the longest time! Such a blessing for killing time. Yes, the boys are wearing "leashes." I too thought they were horrible until I had twins and spent time in an airport with them. They were perfect! The boys are terribly independent and often head in different directions. When your hands are busy with a million different things, they help! :)
We ate breakfast and tried to kill time till the maintenance men arrived to check over the plane. They apparently are an hour from the airport which still stumps me... Finally, after three hours of waiting around, they officially cancelled the flight.
We of course had by this point missed our connection in Phoenix. I rushed to get into the line for our airline to rebook while Matt and Robin took the kids to pick up the luggage and car seats again. I was in line for no less than TWO hours! After moving an inch or so in line, I noticed an airport wheel chair nearby that I pulled into line and sat in. Thank goodness I had "Close to Home" to read while waiting! :) The wheelchair caused a few laughs, but others in line found odd places to get comfy too while waiting.
Matt and talked on the phone across the airport about different plans and remembered that we had bought traveler's insurance (by fluke). We bought it thinking a deadline Matt had at work might affect the vacation so we would need a way out if it did. Then we found it wouldn't; so when Travelocity sent us an email saying our request to buy insurance didn't go through, we didn't buy it again. Well, Travelocity sent us another email saying their previous email was incorrect, we now had Traveler's Insurance. Thank GOD! We were pleased to find out that any meals and costs incurred because of the bird hit would be reimbursed! I will always get insurance from this point on...
I finally reached the desk and the frazzled airport worker. After much work, he was able to get us onto a 7 PM flight to Phoenix that night. We would have to sleep in Phoenix compliments of US Airways, then fly home the next day. So the next step would be surviving the afternoon till then.
Because of our insurance, we came up with a plan to rent a van again until that evening so that the kids could take a nap in their car seats (they were so fried at this point) and we could have some rest as well. We got the last van in SB which happened to be a cargo van. Another blessing added to a long list... We drove up the coast while the kids and I slept and had dinner. We then headed back prepared for round two.
After checking in again and dropping off our luggage one more time, we were on our way to Phoenix.
We arrived without incident and went again to pick up the four suitcases and three car seats. US Airways customer service was not much fun after a day like this. But they did arrange for stay at the Fiesta Resort which was incredibly nice! We waited for a half hour for our shuttle in the 103 degree heat (a surprise blessing as it made the kids quite tame while they waited) at 9:45 PM. We were picked up and whisked off.
Again, the hotel was so nice. Pillow top mattresses and Bath and Body soap in the bathroom. http://www.fiestainnresort.com/photo_gallery/ Unfortunately, we did not have time to enjoy it as we had to leave again the next morning by 8. So the kids fell asleep at 11 PM, and had to be up by 6. It wasn't pretty, let me tell you! Thank goodness the Phoenix airport had a little play mat area (see pic) set up for kids to enjoy while we waited. US Airways gave us $40 in meal vouchers so we took turns while the kids played finding ways to use them!
Finally, we boarded and made our way home by three. It took almost 4 days for the kids to be back to normal and feeling like themselves! We had a wonderful time but are SO GLAD to be back in our beds again and so glad to ave made it safely! Thank you Matthew, Catherine, and Eric for watching the house and bringing the van back and forth.
The picture of Matt with the boys is in front of the airport. And yes, Titus is attacking Wyatt... The movie is of the cargo van while on our drive up the coast aka nap-time!

CA Cont'd

As I mentioned before, Matt and I had a great time hiking. My mother in law came with us to CA which offered us many opportunities for time away from our herd. Amongst the dates etc, we were able to peak a local mountain range which was a round trip of almost 6 miles! The last time Matt and I did any major hiking together was when we lived in AZ and went to the bottom of the Grand Canyon on a trail nicknamed the "Death March" (Matt picked the trail and I didn't find out the nickname till later at a sporting goods store but that's another story).
The view was beautiful and enabled to take in the whole span of mountain ranges and the coast. We were blessed with a clear view of the ocean and the nearby islands which was an absolute miracle because of the prevalent fog I mentioned before. The second picture below shows the islands to the right. We enjoyed the hike and had some great conversations without any interruptions which is a novelty these days. At one point when we neared a pass, we were frightened by a sudden rattle. We realized quickly that it was a rattle snake! It was far enough away that we could still hike through, but it made us keep our guard up. CA also has numerous mountain lion attacks which scared me a little more than Matt but still caused us both to do a double take at every little noise alongside us! There was one part of the trail where we passed a couple of fresh snake skins strewn across the path. We joked that the scene needed a buffalo skull to be complete.
Because of being so out of practice in back country hiking, Matt and I wore shorts. We didn't realize that we had come across a patch of poison sumac of which I have on my hands and legs now! Ugh... The only bruise on an otherwise perfect day!

St Barbara Orthodox Monastery

A friend of ours at St George has a college aged daughter moving into the same area in CA and while visiting will stay at the St Barbara monastery in Santa Paula. She highly recommended we visit and experience the life of these female monastics.
The monastery is fairly new though they've been meeting together for ages. It is a home now that's been turned into a monastery and will be fully renovated down the road. One of the sisters told us that it didn't start growing with new members until our very own Bishop Basil from St George procured relics of St Barbara for the abbess, Mother Victoria to display at St Barbara's. The sister's joked that once you're Orthodox, you're part of a family where all of you know everyone else. It certainly felt that way (we went to church Sunday and the priest at St Demetrios Greek Parish is a close friend of another priest of ours)!
I don't know what I was expecting; maybe solemn women whose constant prayers don't allow room for conversation or social niceties. But I was pleasantly surprised by the depth of wisdom openly shared and pure humour punctuated by wit. We came for 9th hour prayers and were invited to stay for lunch. I don't know why I didn't get a picture of the bounty fresh from the garden! Fresh berries, greens, soups, etc. These women know how to host! They even had Stevia to sweeten our chamomile tea with. We enjoyed the conversation and sharing our conversion stories.
A spunky sister Mary (I guess Mothers are fully clothed, tonsured nuns, while Sisters are those that are clothed, but not yet fully committed) gave us a tour of the icons and relics along the history behind each. Such a foreign and mystical world I wasn't yet sure how to swallow. But I'm eager to learn!
My favorite of the pictures I've included is the one of Ella swinging with Sister Greta, a novice who recently joined the order and is so young! I also love the solemnity of the picture of 9th hour prayers.
We visited again for Vespers and learned so much more. These ladies were a joy to get to know, and the choices they've made force a somber reflection on my own! Lord have mercy.
On a side note, I bought many things from their book store and was excited to find Molly Sabourin's book "Close To Home" in this humble little place! Such a wonderful piece to any Orthodox mother's library. It will now be my gift at any and all baby showers at St George! It enhanced my prayer time so much while in California (especially the chapter on comparisons FYI).

I will post the rest tomorrow. I need to get some sleep! :)

California

I've got so many pics to share! I don't know how to post multiples in one so I'll have to do several posts to capture them all.

We didn't have the money and it was such a wrong thing to do in this uncertain economy... and after we just got our savings where it should be ... and with Obama as president... But we did it anyway. Tickets to CA were SO cheap we couldn't pass it by! We didn't even have to go to the nightmare known as LAX! And it was before the boys turned two... It was wonderful! I used to live in Ventura CA and my father and grandmother still live in nearby Ojai so it made our trip even cheaper to be able to board with family (Grandma). The last time we visited I was pregnant with the twins and unable to make it more than 1o feet without collapsing. But this time, oh this time I was free to go hiking, walking, etc and enjoy the trip fully with the kids!
The first few days on the beach were quite cloudy. We found out from our sailboat trip captain that it's quite normal during this time of the year as the cool ocean air meets the hot mountain breeze. It chilled things a little and made for dismal pics, but not enough to stop my pack from enjoying the wild sea! They were a little timid at first but quickly warmed up to making a game of running from the ocean's waves. Things got a little harder for Wyatt who does not like being forced to do anything when he realized that after playing in the sand which he absolutely loved, he would be forcibly rinsed in the water or under a shower head used by surfers in an open area. He quickly contented himself by the end of the week with sand toys and a more calm play time as opposed to immersing himself waist deep in the sand. Titus took the ocean on full throttle and was even captured on video backing himself up to the waves to get ready to run away faster!
Ella had moments of jumping in the water, other days she'd play in the sand only, and finally just decided at other times to dance in her suit in the ocean air. She came home looking like a sun bleached ocean gypsy child. I love it!

Independence Day

My mother in law's home is our little escape from the city. Two hours north of us, they live near a beautiful lake and on a couple of acres filled with little woody trails, mulberry trees, and creeks to explore. We were excited to bring friends along to share in our escape. We watched the fireworks by the lake, picked berries, went for jeep rides, kayaked, and enjoyed life without a plug! Thank you Robin for putting up with us for that long weekend! :)

Dino Extravaganza!

We are blessed with a children's science museum in town that makes a great get away on a rainy or snowy day. We were very excited when an animatronic dino exhibit visited as it boasted moving dino's that were extremely "life-like!" A friend and I had a good laugh while there as things weren't as promised. The movements were more like twitches that would catch you off guard. I would slowly roll the stroller up to one of the dino's and the boys would be amazed while Ella would be attempting to go under the exhibit rope to get a better look. Then out of nowhere a dino's head would jerk to the right and a noise that was supposed to sound like a roar would erupt but would resemble more a "hideous shrieking eel" (ever seen "Princess Bride?") and would send the boys into frightened whimpers. Thank goodness Ella had fun! She is fearless unlike her momma...
We'll try again next time boys!

Chucky Cheese

My friend's daughter Reagan celebrated her 5th birthday at Chucky Cheese recently. My oh my, what an experience that was! I guessed that the boys would hate it and be totally overwhelmed, but they had a great time! I think I was the one who wanted to run after 5 minutes of a building filled with over-excited children and enough techno beeps and rings to drive anyone insane!

Ella won enough tickets to buy an object that I think was a bracelet but we're not sure still. She loved everything and ran from one ride or game to the next without stopping for a breath. The boys after one car ride warmed up to the place and enjoyed themselves as I said quite a bit. Matt got in the play maze with them and Titus climbed to the top. Wyatt wanted out asap and enjoyed people watching more than anything.

The highlight for me was when my friend's husband dared Matt to get on one of those dance games where you stomp your feet on the colored blocks to match what you see on the screen. Oh, did I enjoy this. Unfortunately, Matt erased the pics before I could download them. Oh well.
